Assistant Manager of Rental Operations
We’re seeking an enthusiastic and action-oriented individual to join our team as an Assistant Manager for Rental Operations. In this role, you will be an essential part of managing day to day operations at our boat and bike rental locations.
The Assistant Manager of Rental Operations supports the daily operations of their assigned Big Muddy Adventures location. This role serves as the on-site operational lead during scheduled shifts, ensuring smooth workflows, exceptional customer experiences, strong team leadership, and safe, efficient rental operations.
The Assistant Manager reports directly to the Manager of Rental Operations and works closely with other Assistant Managers to maintain consistency across locations.
Primary Responsibilities:
Site Leadership & Daily Operations
Serve as the on-site leader during scheduled shifts.
Oversee and monitor staff performance during shifts, fostering a positive and productive work environment.
Lead by example, working alongside staff lakeside and at the sales counter.
Uphold company policies and procedures to ensure safe and enjoyable customer experiences.
Quickly identify and mitigate safety concerns; report incidents or near misses promptly to the Manager of Rental Operations.
Act as a liaison between staff, customers, and the Manager of Rental Operations.
Staff Support & Development
Assist the Manager of Rental Operations in maintaining staff schedules and ensuring adequate coverage.
Help monitor and evaluate staff performance, providing feedback and support.
Identify training needs among staff and communicate them to the Manager of Rental Operations.
Support onboarding and training of new team members.
Meet regularly with the Manager and other Assistant Managers to coordinate operations.
Customer Experience & Rentals
Work alongside staff to assist customers with:- Boat rentals, life jacket fittings, and light paddling and safety instruction- Bike rentals, helmet fittings, and basic bike instruction
Assist with group reservations inquiries.
Operate the sales counter and respond to customer questions and concerns promptly and professionally.
Recommend local paddling routes, biking trails, and highlights.
Ensure all guests feel welcomed, informed, and safe.
Equipment & Safety Oversight
Assist with loading and unloading boats and putting away bikes.
Ensure all rental equipment is clean, functional, properly stored, and in good working condition.
Check bikes for safety, tire pressure, brake function, and cleanliness before and after use.
Maintain site cleanliness and organization.
Identify maintenance needs or site improvement projects and communicate them to the Manager of Rental Operations.
Financial & Administrative Responsibilities
Perform daily drawer settlement and track cash flow with accuracy and accountability.
Conduct weekly petty cash counts and maintain proper documentation.
Assist with inventory management and communicate merchandise and gear needs.
Help maintain engaging retail displays where applicable.
Keep reservation systems (Xola) accurate and up-to-date.
Maintain updated event calendars and posted operating hours.
Communicate operational updates, reservation counts, and site needs to the Manager.
Attend weekly rental meetings as the schedule allows.
Events & Partnerships
Assist in planning and executing special events, educational programs, and fitness activities.
Collaborate with staff and community partners to ensure smooth event operations.
Support day-to-day coordination with on-site partners (location-dependent).
Required Qualifications
At least one year of higher education or one year of paddling/biking-related experience.
Genuine interest in biking and paddling.
Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
Dependable, punctual, and self-motivated.
Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
Comfortable working outdoors in varying weather conditions.
Ability to lift and maneuver boats, bikes, and equipment.
Comfortable working around water and able to self-rescue.
Weekend and holiday availability required.
Access to reliable transportation.
Physical Requirements:
Employment involves strenuous activity including heavy lifting, pushing, pulling, prolonged standing, working outdoors in sun and varying weather conditions, and extended physical movement.
Preferred Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree.
Experience supervising staff or leading teams.
Experience with bike and/or boat repair.
Familiarity with digital payment and reservation systems.
Customer service experience.
Experience biking and paddling recreationally or professionally.
Basic knowledge of biking and paddling safety practices.
CPR/First Aid certification (or willingness to obtain).
Pay: $18.00 - $22.00 per hour

Bike Rental Associate – Big Muddy Adventures at the Arch
Big Muddy Adventures is seeking a part-time Rental Associate to support daily operations at our Gateway Arch bike rental location. This is a customer-facing, seasonal position ideal for someone who loves bikes, enjoys talking to people, and wants to share their knowledge with others.
Responsibilities include outfitting guests with bikes and helmets, checking equipment for safety, handling rentals and payments, and providing great service. If you have experience with bike mechanics or maintenance, that’s a big plus—but we’ll provide training for the right candidate. This is an excellent opportunity to be part of a mission-driven organization while working outside in one of the most iconic public spaces in the country.
Responsibilities:
Greet and assist customers with bike rental inquiries, payments, and returns
Provide safety briefings and helmet fittings
Recommend local routes and trail highlights to visitors
Check bikes for safety, tire pressure, brakes and cleanliness before and after use
Perform basic bike maintenance and adjustments (training provided)
Maintain a clean, organized, and welcoming rental area
Assist with daily setup and storage
Uphold safety protocols and provide a positive guest experience
Handle questions and concerns in a friendly, professional manner
Perform end-of-day closing tasks, including drawer settlement
Qualifications:
A genuine love for bikes and urban riding
Previous customer service experience preferred
Experience with bike maintenance or repair is a major plus
Strong communication and interpersonal skills
Comfortable working outdoors in varying conditions
Able to lift and maneuver bikes and equipment
Familiarity with digital payment systems (Square, iPad, etc.)

Boat Rental Associate - Big Muddy Adventures at The Boathouse
Big Muddy Adventures at the Boathouse serves as one of the locations for River City Outdoors’ rental operations. Situated on Post Dispatch Lake at the Boathouse in Forest Park, we offer paddle boat, canoe, kayak, bicycle, and paddle board rentals, as well as host special events, educational programs, and fitness activities. With a focus on safety, enjoyment, and fostering a love for the outdoors, Big Muddy Adventures at the Boathouse aims to create memorable experiences for all, from beginners to seasoned adventurers.
Position Overview:
We are currently seeking a friendly, enthusiastic individual to join our team as a part-time, seasonal Boat Rental Associate. The Boat Rental Associate will facilitate daily operations, ensure positive customer experiences, and support special events and programming. This fun position offers the opportunity to work outside and interact with customers and fellow crew members as you assist with rentals.
Daily operations include assisting customers to get in and out of boats, outfitting and orienting guests with appropriate equipment and life jackets, processing payments, and performing facility and equipment maintenance and cleaning.

- Assist with special events, educational programs, and fitness activities.

- Maintain cleanliness and organization of the facility, equipment, and surrounding areas.
Qualifications:
- Although swimming is not a allowed or encouraged at Post Dispatch Lake, crew members should be able to swim well enough to stay afloat in the event they accidentally fall in to the lake.
- Previous experience in customer service or a related field preferred.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
- Basic knowledge of boating safety practices and procedures preferred, but not required.
- Comfortable working in an outdoor environment in a variety of conditions and capable of lifting and carrying heavy equipment.
- Must be dependable, punctual, and able to work flexible hours, including weekends and holidays.
- Applicants should be comfortable working on or around water. Occasionally paddling various watercraft is required.

Big Muddy Adventures at Simpson Lake is seeking a part-time seasonal Boat Wrangler to assist our rental operations at Simpson Lake Park. The Boat Wrangler will facilitate daily operations, ensure positive customer experiences, and support special events and programming. This fun position offers the opportunity to work outside in a beautiful park.
Daily operations include loading boats on and off of boat racks, carrying boats from the racks to the water and back, helping customers to get in and out of boats, carrying paddling gear from the trailer to the lake, and processing payments.
