New data from the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis shows outdoor recreation continues to grow as one of Missouri’s strongest industries, contributing $10.7 billion to the state’s economy (2.4% of state GDP) and supporting more than 90,500 jobs (2.9% of state employment).
Communities across the state are seeing the impact, including the St. Louis region.
Outdoor recreation activities such as boating, fishing, paddling, hiking, camping, and climbing generate significant economic impact. St. Louis City produces an estimated $32 million in annual economic impact, while St. Louis County generates approximately $92 million. St. Charles County contributes an estimated $21 million annually.
Despite this growth, Missouri currently ranks 38th nationwide in year-over-year growth in the outdoor recreation economy. Since 2012, the state ranks 30th nationally, with 5.5% average annual growth, highlighting the opportunity for stronger coordination and investment to fully realize the sector’s potential.
Advocates say one solution is the creation of a Missouri Office of Outdoor Recreation, which would help bring together state agencies, communities, and industry partners to develop a coordinated strategy for growing the outdoor recreation economy.
Since 2013, 24 states across the country have established outdoor recreation offices to support businesses, improve access to trails and waterways, coordinate tourism promotion, and strengthen connections between conservation and economic development.

Several neighboring states — including Arkansas and Tennessee — have already established such offices. Supporters say a statewide office could help Missouri compete with other states that are actively investing in their outdoor economies while expanding access to nature and supporting communities that benefit from outdoor tourism.
“Outdoor recreation is already one of Missouri’s most important economic drivers,” said Matt Green, executive director of River City Outdoors. “But the opportunity is even bigger. Establishing a statewide Office of Outdoor Recreation would help align tourism, conservation, and economic development efforts so Missouri can better support communities, attract visitors, and grow this sector responsibly.”
River City Outdoors (RCO) is a nonprofit foundation dedicated to making outdoor recreation in the St. Louis region accessible, inclusive, and transformative for all. The organization supports innovative programming, partnerships, funding, and community initiatives while also publishing Terrain Magazine and operating Big Muddy Adventures, a professional outfitter and guiding company.
“Our goal is not just more recreation, but a stronger and more connected Missouri,” said Green. “With thoughtful leadership and coordination, outdoor recreation can continue to grow jobs, support local businesses, and help communities across the state thrive.”
